ZCZC SPCFWDDY2 ALL FNUS22 KWNS 240700 Day 2 Fire Weather Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0200 AM CDT Sun May 24 2026 Valid 251200Z – 261200Z …CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHWESTERN NEVADA INTO SOUTHEASTERN OREGON… …Synopsis… A potent mid-level trough will move onshore of the Pacific Northwest on D2/Monday as a second mid-level trough transitions northeastward across northern New England. Weak troughing will also persist across the lower Mississippi Valley/southern Plains and across the Southwest. Meanwhile, upper-level ridging will remain in place across the Southeast and central/northern Plains. A surface low will track offshore of New England, with a trailing cold front progressing through the Mid-Atlantic before extending southwestward into the southern Plains. A cold front will also begin to advance eastward across the Pacific Northwest in tandem with a deepening surface low. …Great Basin… A strengthening surface pressure gradient ahead of the approaching cold front will promote sustained southwesterly surface winds of 20-25 mph, with above normal temperatures and minimum RH values of 10-15% also expected. Recent fire activity suggests that fuels are becoming more receptive to wildfire spread across this region. Thus, these conditions are expected to support a corridor of critical fire weather concerns from northwestern Nevada into southeastern Oregon Monday afternoon. Sustained southwesterly winds of 15-25 mph overlapping reduced RH of 15-25% will also promote elevated fire weather conditions across adjacent areas of the Great Basin. …Southwest… A mid-level shortwave trough and accompanying subtropical moisture plume will contribute to weak buoyancy atop well-mixed boundary layer profiles. This is expected to support widely scattered, high-based convection across much of northeastern Arizona and western New Mexico Monday afternoon. PWAT values ranging from 0.4-0.7″ (locally up to 1″) and more marginal LCLs ranging from 2-3+ km AGL will likely favor a mix of wet and dry thunderstorms. Given that fuels across the region remain quite dry (ERCs around the 90th percentile), isolated lightning ignitions remain possible. Thus, the 10% dry thunderstorm probability has been maintained for this update. ..Chalmers.. 05/24/2026 …Please see http://www.spc.noaa.gov/fire for graphic product… CLICK FOR DAY 2 FIREWX AREAL OUTLINE PRODUCT (KWNSPFWFD2)

Note on busy start to fire season from Siskiyou County Office of Emergency Servicesย

2h  ยท

Itโ€™s only the beginning of summer, and itโ€™s already been a busy start to fire season across Siskiyou County.

With hot temperatures, dry fuels, and windy conditions, it does not take much for a small mistake to turn into a fast-moving wildfire.

Please help do your part to prevent the next fire:

๐Ÿšซ Avoid outdoor burning on hot or windy days (it can wait)

๐Ÿ”— Check trailer chains so they are not dragging

๐Ÿš— Never park or drive on dry grass

๐Ÿ›  Use equipment carefully, especially during the heat of the day

๐Ÿšฌ Fully extinguish cigarettes and never toss them from a vehicle

๐ŸŒฒ Keep defensible space around your home clear and maintained

One spark is all it takes.

Our firefighters and fire partners are already working hard this season. Letโ€™s not make their job harder by causing preventable fires.

Stay alert. Stay prepared. Stay fire smart, Siskiyou. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Shasta-Trinity National Forest plans prescribed fire near Mount Shasta

Prescribed fire is a key tool in reducing wildfire risk

(Redding, CA May 13, 2026) โ€” The Shasta-Trinity National Forest is planning prescribed fire operations starting this Friday, May 15, 2026. We estimate this work could continue through the weekend, as weather conditions allow and pending all required approvals.

We use prescribed fires to reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires.

The McBride underburn prescribed fire operation (35 acres) will begin Friday morning about a half-mile west of the Gateway trailhead, near the city of Mount Shasta.

The area may close to the public for several days for public safety. Watch for warning signs along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burns. For more detailed information about air quality, go to AirNow online or download the app. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

We will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled.

Stay informed about the scheduled prescribed fires through the forest website, social media channels, and InciWeb, the interagency incident information system. We will notify county emergency management officials when burning begins.
