The Dixie Fire burns in the hills on August 17, 2021 near Milford, California.

Homes in the town were ravaged by the fire, reduced to ash and metal. A post office and elementary school in the town were also destroyed. Downed power lines and poles destroyed by the fire littered the streets.

3:45 p.m. update: Power shutoffs have begun

Due to a combination of strong winds and extreme wildfire conditions, Pacific Power officials have decided to proceed with a Public Safety Power Shutoff this afternoon for about 3,000 of its customers in the Dunsmuir and Castella areas.

The shutoff will stay in effect until weather conditions are safe to re-energize the electrical network, Pacific Power said in a press release Tuesday afternoon.

A community resource center will be open until 10 p.m. today and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., as necessary, for the following needs:

• Shelter from environment
• Air conditioning
• Potable water
• Seating and tables
• Restroom facilities
• On-site medical support
• Refrigeration for medicine and/or baby needs
• On-site security
• Communications capability such as Wi-Fi access, cellphone, satellite phone, radio, etc.
• Charging stations for cellphones, AM/FM/Weather radios, computers, etc.
• Televisions

CA-KNF River Complex: 48,193 acres grass and brush, 10% contained. Active fire behavior overnight with torching and spotting observed. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for gusty winds and low RH Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon thru the evening. Evacuation Orders and Warnings remain in effect. Threats to structures, power and emergency communications infrastructure, historical and cultural resources, critical wildlife habitat, commercial timber lands, grazing allotments, and critical watersheds. Pacific Crest Trail closure in effect. County Road 93 remains closed with other road closures in effect. Smoke impacts to a Class 1 Airshed. Type 2, CA Team 15 (Harris) transitioned to command at 0600. NIMO Team (Houseman) transitioned to command at 0600.

CA-ENF Caldor Fire: 6,500 acres brush and timber, 0% contained. The fire pushed north overnight into the Grizzly Flats area prompting new Evacuation Orders and Warnings. A Red Flag Warning for gusty winds and low RH for Tuesday afternoon thru Wednesday evening. Evacuation Orders and Warnings remain. Threat to power and communication infrastructure, private timberland, grazing lands, agricultural lands, critical wildlife habitat, historical and cultural Native American sites, impacts to the Consumes watershed and the Mokelumne Wilderness Class 1 Airshed. Unified Command: Eldorado N.F. and Amador-El Dorado Unit. Cal Fire Team 6 on order.

CA-SHF Monument Fire: 119,280 acres timber and brush, 10% contained. Active fire behavior overnight with crowning and long range spotting observed. A Red Flag Warning issued for Tuesday afternoon thru Wednesday evening. Structures threatened with additional Evacuation Orders and Warning issued. Electrical transmission and distribution lines have been damaged. Threats to critical power, water and communication infrastructure, Trinity River Watershed and recreational sites, private timberland and grazing allotments, historical and cultural sites, and critical wildlife habitat. Ironsides lookout destroyed with associated repeater site. Hayfork Lookout and associated communication infrastructure threatened. Highway 299 remains closed. There is a threat of the fire burning into the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Road, area and trail closures in effect. Type 1, AK Team (McDonald) assigned, tentative transfer of command 8/18 @ 0600. Type 1, Team 5 (Young) in command.

CA-BTU Dixie Fire: 604,511 acres timber, 31% contained. Active overnight fire behavior with spotting up to 5 miles reported. A Red Flag Warning has been issued for gusty winds and low thru Wednesday evening. Fire spotted across Hwy 395 prompting Hwy closure and additional Evacuation Orders and Warnings near Janesville. Evacuation Orders and Warnings in effect for multiple communities. Lassen County 911 remains down from fiber optics cable damaged. Threats to critical water and power infrastructure, critical communications infrastructure for CHP, Cal Fire, Fish and Wildlife, Feather River College, high value private timberlands, Feather River Watershed, critical wildlife habitat, cultural and historical sites, and earthquake seismic sensors. Rail lines closed due to damage and continue to remain threatened. Highway 44 is threatened. Road closures remain for Hwy 44, 89, 36, 147 and Hwy 32, 395, and County Road A-21. Areas closures for Lassen N.F, Plumas N.F and Lassen N.P., the Pacific Crest Trail is closed in the fire area. Smoke impacts to Caribou Wilderness and a Class 1 Airshed. Lassen Park closure in effect. Unified command: CAL Fire IMT 3 (See), Type 1, CA Team 1 (McGowan) & Lassen Volcanic National Park. CA-SHF McFarland Fire: 97,407 acres timber and brush, 51% contained. Active overnight fire behavior. A Red Flag Warning and Fire Weather Watch issued for gusty winds and low RH from Tuesday evening to Wednesday afternoon. ICP was moved to the Shasta County Fairgrounds due to fire activity. Evacuation Orders and Warnings remain in effect with additional Evacuation Orders issued along the Hwy 36 corridor. Highway 36 has been closed. Threats to private timberlands, critical power, gas and communication infrastructure, critical wildlife and plant habitat, cultural and historic sites, and to Harrison Gulch Ranger Station and campgrounds. Road, trail and area closures remain in effect. Smoke impacts to Class 1 Airshed. Naturally occurring asbestos poses a risk to firefighter safety. CA-SRF McCash Fire: 3,233 acres brush and timber, 1% contained. Active fire behavior observed overnight. A Red Flag Warning issued for gusty winds and low RH Tuesday afternoon thru Wednesday Evening. Threats to structures, Ukonom Mtn Lookout, communications infrastructure, cultural and historical sites of the Karuk Tribe, public timberland, critical wildlife habitat, and to the Klamath River Watershed. Smoke impact to a Class 1 Airshed. Road area and trail closures in effect. Portion of the fire is burning in the Marble Mountain Wilderness. Type 2 SW Team 3 (Gesser) in command.

CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER: Starting Tuesday, the Northstate will be under Red Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches. We’re tracking a significant wind event which will greatly increase our fire danger and increasing the spread of the #DixieFire, #MonumentFire, #McFarlandFire, #HaypressFire and #AntelopeFire. The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office issued new evacuation orders for the Antelope Fire Monday including Medicine Lake, Bullseye Lake, and Blanch Lake.
